Creating the Right Expectations

We can get jaded in this business.  And sometimes create some unrealistic expectations.  I once had a Diamond Director of mine quit and go elsewhere because he was only making $50,000 a month and thought he was a failure. 

We have people quit all the time because they’re not millionaires after 60 days.  And they think they should be fabulously wealthy within a year or two.

But what’s realistic?

Network Marketing is usually a two to five year plan.  That means that within that time frame, serious people will be able to replace their current job or income and have created a solid residual income.  The top achievers will do this in two years, most others will be closer to five.

This doesn’t mean they will be drinking out of coconuts, traveling by private jet, and have people throwing rose petals before their path.  It simple means that they will be able to replace their current job or income and have created a solid residual income.  In other words, they have escaped that rat race, and now have a solid foundation for creating true wealth.

Do we sometimes create millionaires from scratch within a few years?  Yes, but they are exceptions, not the rule.  So we shouldn’t be recruiting promising results like that.

And let’s get real…

Let’s suppose someone is making $2,000, $4,000 or $10,000 a month after this time frame.  This is something they started part-time on a miniscule investment.  They began from scratch.  And they are set up to have a huge income and lifestyle breakthrough very rapidly.  After only a few years.

This is not something to denigrate, but something to celebrate. 

Do you realize how long it takes to get these results in traditional jobs?  Or how large the investments are required in traditional businesses?  Network Marketing is miles ahead of the other options.  And do you really understand how positive, meaningful and transformational incomes like these are to 90 percent of the world!

It’s not get rich quick.  But it is get rich real.

  1. Randy,
    I think much of this issue stems from people using big, fast incomes to convince people to join their business. And of course, when the prospect does not reach that income easily, they become disullisioned and quit.
    I remember talking to a top earner in a well-know nutritional products company who was in his first MLM. He told everyone on stage what his income was (around $4,000 a month) and at the time was still involved in his financial advice practice and happy doing so. To him, that 4 grand was plenty to help live a better lifestyle, invest a little better and stay totally debt free. $4,000 a month in his part-time MLM business was all it took, built in two years of solid work.
    The money is there for those willing to work for it, but as you say…be willing to do the time, do the work, and don’t beat yourself up when you’re not making 50 or a 100 thousand a month.

  2. Randy: This is one of your better posts. I am so sick and tired of network marketers who are making a substantial income telling people how easy it is and they can be wealthy inside of a year.

    I should send this post to my former millionaire sponsor but I know her ego and arrogant attitude will dismiss it.

    As someone who’s been both in the corporate and self-employed as a manufacturer’s rep for several years, network marketing is a very good business model. It’s fun and hard work but that will equal financial freedom in time.

  4. I work in the rat race industry, and I just started my own home based business, about 3 years ago. It is a total 180 split from what is taught at the university level. Self development and belief is a must,just like having a degree a must in the corporate business. I have spent the last 3 years working on my personal beliefs, what is important, who is most important, and re-connecting in faith. I feel stronger, faster,lighter, view of the world

    I understand completely this concept. Nothing worth achieving is easily had. Setting realistic exceptions is very important for us and others. Though it seems there must be a formula like when “Apple” Launch’s a Product. They are able to connect with their audience and change the face of technology each time. Like there is a book called “Save The Cat” by Blake Snyder. It shows how screen writing is done is successful movies. I have been thinking about how the “Apple Commercial” when it was released was and it’s unique message. I know there must be a Master Key System. I’m so close I can feel it.

    Like Walk Disney, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates. They all know something, right? I know that umber success is only for a few though there must be a way to accelerate everyone’s progress. I see how a lot of the Network Marketing Companies are accelerating in this year. I have committed to finding out what the key is. There must be a duplicable way to reach all that kicks them into gear like a bootcamp.
    I use to work in the USCG in the technology education center and assisted in the training of over 1,000+ recruits. I learned a lot of what causes people to get it and get success in their function or job. I also worked with Dale Carnegie and saw how people develop over time. There must be a process that can be done to really spark the acceleration. So that is what I’m creating, though of course it has to be tested to get it right. I want to create videos and material with “After Effects & Maya.” I think that the visual component of learning in the industry is missing. The only reason I have gotten as far as I have is because I have stayed in contact with the teachers such as yourself though the social networks & blogs. It does seem that repetition is the key to success in learning a new skill. I just know that there must be a way to reach their model of the world in a way that “Star Wars” back in the 70’s or the matrix. It was the “Hollywood” effect that they had that made their growth so big. It will either take a lot of training on my part or once I get acceleration, money to hire and create it. Though I so want to I love to innovate 🙂 Though only time will tell and many beta tests.

    Even though I am not in ‘this’ company I will still use the products. Not only that I have the highest regard for the founder and my sponsor line up there are helpful. I do not know about the millions and millions of dollars but am delighted to spread the word round and be a greater benefit to fellow human beings. I guess the reward will come.

  7. I’ve made it a habit not to over-hype the network marketing industry. And I achieve this by making sure my prospects and new people are well schooled on what to expect and what to do — if you don’t do what you ought to do, you won’t get results. I create an atmosphere of genuine expectations. But I also emphasize that they can achieve their wildest dreams and live grand lifestyles after 5 years and above if they stick to the business and system and don’t have a short-cut mentality

    In the five years I’ve been in the industry (March 1 is my anniv *yay*) I’ve watched so many in my company “patch their way to the top” to achieve a title and up front income and today they are no where to be found.

    For those who become a student to the system, who have a relentless work ethic and a desire to live full out — this industry will allow them to create massive wealth.

    Wealth is more than your financial portfolio, wealth is a mindset. Most who get involved in the industry have decades of programming to undo. They need to shift from an employee mindset and a traditional business mindset to an entrepreneurial mindset.

    Creating that kind of wealth doesn’t happen overnight! Persistency & consistency are key.

    As my mentor and success coach always says, “Rome wasn’t built in a day, Rome was built every day!”

    “Rome was not built in a day” Any great plan or big dream cannot be
    achieved overnight or easily.We have to create a culture of realistic expectations. In MLM there is a potential to make real mony,but it’s take
    great investment of time,work,learning,teaching and give value to others
    all the time,at last you reap what you sowing seed.

    Like your MLM Manifesto, blogs, tapes, trainings and seminars one of your greatest appeals is telling the straight truth. After 17 years as a full time MLM’r it’s hard to believe how well I’m paid by my company for what is now an absurdly small amount of ongoing work, however it took way more work, time, effort, energy, diligence and ongoing self development than I could believe to make it happen. Your remote coaching and mentor-ship helped make it happen. Thanks for your years of service to our great industry.

  12. Wow, this is a big eye opener. Having tons of money is great but I just want to be able to work for myself and not have to worry about the day I lose my job due to the economic downfall. I got the book as well and will start reading it. Do you recommend telling people this before you even promote your business? Everywhere I go there’s hype about making six figures in less than this amount of time and blah blah blah! There has to be hype to create hope but how should it be implemented? Thank you!
