Waiting for Leaders

So Meitham raises some interesting issues on the chess match strategy. He asks about people who don’t have many team members and can’t wait for someone to make a move.  And he asks about the people that stay below the radar and don’t bubble up as leaders for a long time.  Let’s deal with these…

The first one is easy.  Sponsor more people!  I can’t begin to tell you how many people are struggling because they sponsored a couple people and keep chasing after them, hoping one will make them rich.

You don’t need hundreds of people to create wealth in this business.  Most huge organizations are built with eight or 10 serious people.  But you may have to expose the business to a couple hundred people, and actually sponsor 40 or 60 or more – to get those ten serious players.

Now if that scares you, just know that I’m talking about if you want to earn $60,000, $80,000 or more than $100,000 a month.  If your goals are smaller, you required effort would be as well.  But the point is, you still won’t do it with just a couple people.  If you are figuring that the first four people you sponsor are all going to be rock stars, you will likely be disappointed.

So if you don’t have people making moves yet, you need more people.  It’s that simple.  That doesn’t mean that the people you have now won’t do it eventually.  Some will.  But they operate on their time frame, not yours.

Now how do we deal with them in the meantime?  That’s what we’ll explore on the next post.   Until then, let us hear your thoughts on this.

  1. Randy:
I have been waiting for this information for a long time.
It reinforces what I knew intutitvely.
When You first started, would you say that you need to talk to 100 people to get your first leader?
    Something like
    100 contacts
    50 presentations
    25 customers
    12 distributors
    6 semi-leaders
    and 1 leader?
    thanks,
So, I would need to talk to 6,000 people to find those 8 to 10 serious people?

    1. No you won’t need near that many! Most people if they will expose the opportunity to at least a few hundred will sponsor at least 20 or 30 and get four or five serious. And if they expose it to at least 500 or 600, they end up with the ten. And the number actually doing presentations is much smaller as well.

        1. Randy – surely that depends on the type of people you speak to – the quality of person/leader and they way you speak to them.

Kim Klaver had very high stats – like you have to speak to 1000 to get one good leader.

      1. I think it also depends on where you meet people and where you spend your time. If you have some sort of lead generator for example online, also depends how well those leads are screened before you speak to them, this could increase your conversion rates when it comes to getting leaders.

    2. Hi.

Enrique, I believe it is just about simple psychology.

If you really look for professional leaders and you act like one yourself, you will find them sooner than you think.

Why make it harder than it is? Just be professional and see to that you know what you are talking about.

I don´t know how many members you have enrolled, but this is my suggestion.

My business is about me. I have noone to blame if I fail.

  2. I needed this one today RG … was talking to my sponsor about this same thing with the new people I put in last week … going to keep doing the business – selling product and sponsoring people, going to stay in the grind!

  3. I am not a number person but stats help me put things into perspective in this business. It’s comforting to know that I am getting somewhere if I take the actions. We were taught early in our first business when saying our weekly results – “there is only one small box here big enough to put a number in and no words of explanation or excuse will fit.” it was funny and true enough to shut us up, put our blinkers on, and start running. 😉

I’m curious though – when is it a good time to start teaching about these numbers and stats to your distributors?

I don’t think I would have signed up if I knew from the beginning that I will experience all the challenges and emotions I’ve had these years to advance in rank in this business. Or maybe if I knew about the numbers from the beginning. Or is that good?

The thing is, as I learned things gradually, step by step, as if I’m learning a driver’s lesson, I enjoyed the learning and the implementing and then started to gett results (focusing on the actions I took as a result and not the sign ups as we didn’t have control over that). Then that made it more fun to continue the process. But everyone is different.

Is there a good time and bad time to talk about these numbers to a new person? When is the best time to teach? Or is there such a best time?

    1. I think you talk about the daily method of operation – meaning the number of contacts you must make – right away. If they get scared away, they’re not the right people for the business.

  4. Thanks Randy,
Yes, if you don’t know how to work a room (so to speak) and are just talking to one or two people you are wasting your time.
Mingle, Learn, Manage that’s what MLM means to me!
Have a Great New Years Randy!

    1. The truth is, these numbers will be different for everyone. And they will grow better for everyone. When you start, you can invite ten people and get one to show up. Later you may be three out of ten, and yet later eight out of ten.

That’s why if people will just stay in the game, and remain consistent they will break through.

  5. Activity is required. When I learned how to ride a bicycle I couldn’t figure it out and submitted to having ‘training’ wheels put on my bike. I could not handle just taking them off either and had to be ‘tricked’ out of them by having them raised a half inch every day or so until they were for looks only. Inviting enough new people each week to look at the opportunity will eventually have people look and enough who look some will say yes.

The “guy” to compare numbers to is Bill Britt of Amway. When he began there were no tools like we have today. He showed the ‘plan’ across a table at ‘Perkins’ or brought people to a meeting. Bill invited 10 new people a day, 4 days a week to look at his business. I don’t know his beginning numbers but on average he had 27 people a month look at the business. That is about 18% or nearly one out every five people he offered/invited to look actually sat down with him and looked.

He sponsored on average 5 new people a month into his business. Again about 1 out 5 who looked got in.

    Half quit.

Over 10 years he invited around 18,500 to look and 3,268 looked at the business. He sponsored 621 and 317 quit. Only 62 ever worked the business to earn $500/month or more. That is one out of ten. 11 made him rich and 3, just three, each made him a Million dollars a year. 1 out of every 6100+!

With the tools we have today, the compensation plans and the training we can do much better. You have to get on the bike, with or without training wheels, to find your leaders. Thinking about it, reading about it, listening and every other kind of studying about it will not do it. Build a candidate list, add to it daily and invite, invite, invite, invite……. Follow up, follow up, follow up…..

    Thank you Randy.

    1. Makes alot of sense. I agree with respect to the array of resources and training material we have today those numbers could be improved.

  6. Some consider it a numbers game and to a certain extent it is. But personal growth and relationships will build more leaders than anything. That’s what I learned from experience. And as said before the numbers can fluctuate. But you attract what you are. To me I must first be the leader they see. Visualizing yourself attracting leaders I believe is really important.

Either way you go success leaves footprints. We just have to follow them.

    Hope this helps

    Joshua

  7. Great reply, Michael!

    Thank you for sharing.

I agree with the tools we have today, we can invite a lot more people much more quickly than ever before and can be truly global right from our home computer.

  8. Yessss, numbers are important. But as I grew older in this business, I am looking for quality in people as well. To reduce waist of time as much, as it is possible here. I became leader in this business, I was not one before. But I had certain qualities, which made it possible.

  9. Hey Rady
Thanks for your post today. You are absolutely right and I started making calls just after i finished reading the post. What I know now is that I will recruit more people and in the meantime I will follow the chess theory with my team members. That will give me the ability to play the chess theory since I have new people and I dont have to chase them to make me grow. It is both exciting and comforting.
Best wishes for the New Year
    Meitham

  10. Hi
If you are going to build a team then you need to learn how to do it and get better at it. This is how the stats improve. In other words learn to work smart.
Some distributors never get beyond the basic education they get from their company, which is unfortunate because there is plenty of good advice out there.
We are always on the look out for the next person, there’s plenty of them out there! Just ask everyone if they would like to make a change. Park the ones that don’t respond appropriately and move on. Sure you wil talk briefly to a lot of people but how difficult is that?
    Mike

  11. Hi Randy,

Isn’t it going to take a very long time to follow this strategy? I mean it’s not only me, let’s say, who needs to present the job to a couple of hundred people. It’s the same thing for my team members too. How is that gonna work?
    One more question:
How many serious “direct” leaders did you have in your organization? If you don’t mind me asking.

    Thank you

  12. Hi Randy,

you got me, I am one of this guys.

It feels so comfortable with my small team.

But now it is really time to sponsor some more serious people.

Thanks for your great posts and for our meeting in Budapest in this great 2009!

Would be nice to meet you again in 2010 in Europe.

    Best regards

  13. I started with an MLM company, but I did not have any expperince of MLM.

They told me to recruite through advertising on classified web sites, all I got was people who were trying to recruit me to their company.

I had to buy £100 chocolates, these are healthy chocolates.

The thing is I can’t sell these chocolates, becuase they are to expensive to sell at a £100 a box.

The highest earners where as you said people who were already establish as MLM marketers.

I would have to recruit people who would have to purchase £100 chocolates to become a member a month, which is a big outlay.

The people I would be looking for are experinced MLM marketers.

I am not sure if this is a pryamid or not.

Before you enter into an MLM you should think about what they are offering and is MLM is for you.

  14. I agree Randy.
You need to expose your network marketing opportunity to more people.
Thanks for sharing this great insight to us all.

    Have a great day!
    God Bless!
