The Big ‘D’ and I Don’t Mean Dallas

The economic meltdown around the world continues, and shows no signs of abating.  Personally I don’t believe we’re anywhere near the bottom yet.  I believe we’re heading into a Depression with a ‘D.”

Now the governments won’t want to acknowledge that and they will do their best to paint a pretty picture.  They’re afraid of a run on the banks, and they have no answer for that.  But there are some undeniable facts.

The job losses are still accelerating at an astonishing rate.  There is still a huge amount of subprime mortgages that haven’t come due, and millions more people that are paying their mortgage, but debating whether they would do better to slide into default and look for a bailout.

There are a lot of statistics and trends you can compare to their counterparts in 1929, and you would find today’s numbers are worse than the Great Depression.

So how does all this affect Network Marketing?

Well we’re going to have to get better.  Our marketing message needs to adapt.  I just appeared on Eric Worre’s daily NMPro show and shared some thoughts on this.  Watch it here and let me know what you think.

  1. Circumstances are neither negative nor positive; they are what you make them.
I strongly believe that things are gonna get better in a year’s time.

    1. Earl, wish I could be as optimistic as you. However, after speaking with a number of corporate recruiters, the companies they recruit for are on hold for 18 months to 2 years. I hope that you are right.

  2. Hey Randy How are you ?

I just saw your first part with Eric Worre. It is so true !!
Personally I believe tha our industry WILL SURVIVE THE Deppression period because of the very NATURE and VALUES it is founded on.
More and more people gonna see the major benefits for them to apply the canges needed to shift themselves to MLM.
Many of them are on the fence crying “It will pass”. They are afraid horribly to go out of their comfort zone.
I think that by the end of 2010 our indastry can grow by 20-25%.
This is a HUGE opportunity for us to become PRO (by decision) and help so many others reach thei goals for better life.
    WE CAN MAKE HYSTORY !!

You are an inspire to all of us in the industry !!
    yours,

  3. Randy, you are usually right on the mark with your posts but this time you missed big time. Your current post about the recession – no Despression – was as negative as watching the news or listening to an “expert” predict the future of the economy. Yes, unemployemtent is 8% but that also means that 92% of the workforce is still employed. While there are companies that had to eliminate jobs and cut costs there are also companies that are using the recession as an excuse to do the same. They are not neccessarily hurting. While there is no denying that business has slowed, it will come back and there are signs that things are picking up. This recession will end up making most people stronger and more responsibile about how they both invest and spend their money. While network marketing is an excellent business model, unemployed people are looking for j-o-b-s. They want immediate gratification to replace their current income. It takes a special person to make it in network marketing. Getting anyone you meet to sign up is not a plan for long term growth in an organization and certainly doesn’t lend itself to duplication – successful duplication. Sorry Randy but we are NOT in a Depression and your advertising that we are is nothing more than the sensational tabloid journalism that is used to sell stories.

    1. The unemployment rate is 8.9%, but if you factor in those who have given up or who have taken part time work, the actual unemployment rate is closer to 15%. They are fudging the numbers. I encourage anyone and everyone to do their own due diligence.

Can anyone explain to me how the economy is going to get moving when we have a current administration whose policies are hostile to Free Enterprise and Capitalism, and who has businesses hunkering down by its unfriendly policies? Additionally, Consumer spending is on the decline, and with unemployment going up, it will continue to decline. This does NOT spell economic recovery.

Finally, the pending failures of Chrysler and GM further compound the problem.

So with all of the doom and gloom, what is the answer? Well, Randy is right. Network Marketing is part of the solution, and I am proud to be a part of the industry. However, it would also be helpful for all of us if we had an Administration whose policies were a little more friendly to business.

How about cutting corporate taxes? Minimal but effective regulation? Downsizing Government? Eliminating the Capital Gains Tax? All of this would lead to recovery and growth. But you won’t get ANY of that with Obama.

America is a great country, and we have some control over our own attitudes and individual choices. We have control in taking positive action.

But unfortunately for all of us, America made a mistake in its choice for President and we are all going to have to work together to get through the bumpy times ahead.

  4. It’s ovious that network marketing is the only way for average people to create wealth ! Thanks for the great inspiration Randy !
