The 7 Sponsors to Avoid Like the Plague, Part 2
Ok last post we looked at the first type of sponsor to avoid, the cult leader. Now let’s look at the second type…
“Fast Money Mary”
You know this type: The person promising big money as soon as you start the business. They often wave around copies of bonus checks and regale you with stories of their big payday as soon as they got started.
A lot of them did make big bucks their first month or two in the biz. But they’re leaving out something very important. Namely the sweetheart deal they got from the company, or the fact that they actually rolled over a bunch of people from another program.
These are one-time deals for them, and you have no chance of duplicating this. Nor do you need to.
Our business is a two- to four-year plan for achieving serious financial success. That’s an amazing time frame, and you have no need to apologize for that.
Your first year is a learning opportunity. Yes, you’ll be making some money, but you should be investing that back into your business. If you replace you career income in two or three years you’re doing amazing. And probably a little faster than most.
You’re not supposed to be rich in a month or two. There are no shortcuts to success and the only free cheese is in the mousetrap. If someone is promising you to earn thousands of dollars your first month, you probably should be looking elsewhere for a sponsor.
So what do you think? Let us know below. And next post we’ll reveal sponsor number three…

Hi — I’m so glad to have this point spelled out truthfully. It’s something that everyone should know as a fact – that big instant earners are usually from another company (where they were successful) and brought all or most of their downline with them. You may know something about this, Randy 🙂
On another subject: I’m getting the free mlm course – just got Lesson No.3, and I wonder if there’s a way for you to do a “printable version” of them that would utilize the whole page, and make printing them just 3-4 pages instead of 7-8 pages. They’re well worth keeping for use with my prospects and later my team, but a printable version would save some trees 🙂
Thanks for all you do for us — wish I still had copies of The Rat Race 🙂

I think those are all plain text, so that’s the printable version. And my insights are worth the extra paper! 🙂

True!
Mike
in my search for the right company to work with i was finding this scenario a lot! and to make it worse the leaders even deny being involved with another MLM before… hehehe a quick search online revealed a lot about their past MLM’s…
i am not interested in the rollover kings and queens… i couldn’t give a rip about their success, it doesn’t mean a thing to me. in my opinion, the real network marketing pro can walk away from a company cold turkey and build a new downline without raping their last company…
what i look for in a sponsor, (business partner) is the ability to build a TEAM! and as i watch that leader grow if i don’t see his core team growing as well and at the same time, then that is not the person i want to work with. i am sick and tired of all the selfish, self absorbed self proclaimed experts it is enough to gag a horse…
if the top guy is successful but he did not do it with a solid core team, and he did not bring his team along with him on his journey to success, then he is not a success in my opinion, he is just another wealthy self absorbed, self righteous jerk, another type of fast money mary and i stay well away from them!
fast money marys are a dime a dozen and a total and complete waste of time… they are far worse for this business than the magnetic marketing gurus…
Thanks Randy for straight talk about a real industry. I call him Fast Money Marvin..but Mary works too. This presentation is not gender specific, but egoic 2 years is real time and a true representation of the time it takes. Much appreciated professionalism Randy.
Oh yes, the morons that post their checks and 1099’s on their website. Of course they don’t tell you how long it took them to get to that point in their career. My favorite is the person who is in , for example, a nutrition company and they make it to the top in record time. They tend to forget to tell you that they are a doctor, surgeon or someone else with strong influence and a large database.
Once again, right on the money Randy. Indeed, the free cheese is in the mousetrap and it’s a shame how many uneducated, unsuspecting two-legged mice there are out there.
Besides, isn’t it illegal to entice people by displaying checks, cash and 1099s?
Thanks. I look forward to the next post.
Totally correct, although I believe that most new distributors with no previous experience in NM actually work this way, not because they mean harm, but because they are currently living in the excitement and they are duplicating what their sponsor told them…
So many people look like this at first, but the key is that, once you understand, you stop!!!
I personally believe I fell for this a bit, I said a year not months, but certainly that was still way off!!

Here is some thoughts from Eric Worre on talking to your friends and family:

yes these people are all over the place and I think that they give networkers a bad name. I like honest people and I shy away from these types of people. They might be right but they never tell how many years that it really takes.
These ‘Fast Money’ types are doing the greatest harm to our profession right now. Every day I see countless distributors follow a ‘leader’ who has jumped to another company and earnt a huge cheque in their first month. Of course, the fact that they rolled over a large amount of people from their previous company into their downline is never mentioned. All we hear about is how much ‘better paying’ and ‘full of integrity’ the new company is.
Months later, we get hundreds of disillusioned team members who realise they’ve been duped, and the industry ends up losing these good people forever.
I’m not saying that having people join you from your previous company is wrong…your ex-team members can choose to follow you if they choose to of course. What I believe Randy is referring to are those that recruit from their previous company and then DENY that they talked to anyone or are not transparent in declaring it is the reason for the big first month bonus.
Thankfully, as the industry becomes more and more professional, and people such as Randy, Eric Worre, Len Clements and John Fogg continually raise the bar, we shall see a day when these ‘Fast Money Mary’s’ are slowly weeded out from the industry.
Man I wish I could get you to kick butt with my upper echelons they need this reality check. I have no illusions I have a three year plan to go part-time network marketing and part-time personal development coach. But 4 – 5 years becoming full-time network marketing hell yea I am going for that target.
I see this all the time. I see people’s dreams dye on the vine because they realize that it didn’t happen the way their sponsor said it would. You could earn those big fat checks fast but I wouldn’t sign up for that class.
We expect something in network marketing that we don’t even get in franchises. (Breaking even the first year). I agree that this is a 3-5 year business to build a long term income. What else would you be doing with your time?
I have yet to encounter an mlm that does NOT fall into this category, so I don’t know what the hell all of you are talking about.
That´s right, the internet is full of this sponsors.
Everyday mails who earned millions in the first two seconds he did his business.
Wonderful!
This is something I call “keeping it real” – I’ve dedicated an entire chapter in my new book to this topic. Fast Money Mary is everywhere, not just NM. She hangs around in internet marketing circles, Forex forums and any where else she thinks she can sucker people with claims of big, easy riches. Unfortunately, Fast Money Mary does very, VERY well for herslef. There are a lot of people who believe what she tells them. People want easy and they want wealth and Mary knows this well.
I’ve been affiliated by one of those sponsors. I wish I’ve red this blog before signing up whit this people. I don’t want to become one of this guys, so I focused in selling the products rather than affiliating people I know.
