If I wake you up at 3 am, shine a flashlight in your face and ask you to do a 30-minute training on inviting skills – could you do it?
If you plan on being a leader, the answer better be ‘yes.’
Because your ability as a trainer plays a pivotal role in your success as a network marketing leader. Last post, we looked at your ability to inspire your team. Let’s continue the series with a deeper look at the level of skill you need to develop. Because every leader needs to be able to conduct a training segment on any one of five topic areas – at any time.
These areas are:
- Meeting People
- Working a Candidate List
- Inviting
- Follow Up
- Your Product Line
If you’ve followed my work for any length of time, you know I consider the first four the basic skill sets that everyone must become proficient in. And the fifth topic is necessary education that every leader should be able to impart. Being able to train in these five topics are the “table stakes” – meaning the minimum requirement of skill for a serious leader.
You should be able to conduct a 15, 30, 60, or 90-minute version of every one of these. (At any time.) You expand each segment as needed, by adding in additional stories, jokes, examples, case studies, role-playing, or other audience participation.
So let’s suppose you arrive at a major event thinking you are not on the agenda. The event organizer informs you that one of the scheduled trainers has missed a flight connection, and they need you to take their place.
You shouldn’t fall into a panic or be mumbling about not having a PowerPoint presentation prepared. The only correct response is, “Certainly. I’d be happy to help. What’s the topic and length you need?”
By the way, here’s a different, but related scenario…
Let’s suppose you come to an event prepared to give a 90-minute presentation, but the event is running 30 minutes behind. Your job as a leader is to do an amazing 60-minute presentation on the topic, and get the event back on time.
